piss pot

Being the kind of person who likes to learn by doing and being in the process of thinking about transforming waste, I decided to do some experiments with piss. Firstly, I wanted to test out the P-Mate’s that Pia Ednie-Brown, the Director of the Contaminated Life project, so kindly gave me for my birthday. (See picture below.) I was a little dubious about them and prepared for a messy experience. However, I was pleasantly surprised – no drip or spill whatsoever. I used the P-Mate to piss into an empty bottle and then I thought that maybe I would see what would happen if I evaporated the urine. I have been reading up on how to extract urea crystals from urine, but not having much knowledge of chemistry am finding the texts a little hard to understand. However, they do suggest that evaporation is an important step in the process….

Well, I didn’t really think about that one did I! Ewww. Evaporation = Concentration. My kitchen now smells like a urinal and I have a pot coated with dark and sticky urine concentrate. I think there might be a little basic chemistry study in order…
