on the theme of waste and excess
Sorting through the detritus of last year to make way for the next – better late than never – I came upon this quote from Cyril Connolly jotted on a scrap of paper:
“The goal of every culture is to decay through over civilisation… the civilsation of one epoch becomes the manure for the next.”
Waste is an excess.
Excess produces waste.
An excess becomes productive when it overwhelms the structure that wastes it, generating transformation.
Waste is transformation about to happen.
Transformation is an excessive bubbling over into the next moment.
In which I must return to sorting detritus…
